US President Donald Trump signed orders on Monday imposing new tariffs of 50 percent on certain Canadian goods, justifying the move by citing what he described as “discriminatory treatment” in the sectors of alcoholic beverages, automobiles, and dairy products.

The US White House clarified that some imports, such as energy, potash, and goods subject to specific sectoral tariffs, would be exempt from these duties.

However, it noted that the new measures would include goods entering the United States under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

The agreement, concluded during Trump’s first presidential term, stipulates that its validity must be renewed by July 1 at the latest to extend it for 16 years.

However, the United States announced earlier this month that it would not renew the agreement, meaning it will be extended on an annual basis unless one of the member states formally announces its withdrawal.

Canada and Mexico are among the United States’ most significant trading partners, but they were also among the first victims of the tariffs imposed by Trump following his return to the White House in January 2025.
