Floods and landslides kill Indians

Officials said today that around 25 people were killed by floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains that fell in northern and northeastern India at the beginning of this week, with forecasts predicting more rainfall in the coming days.

A senior police official stated that around 15 people died in separate rain-related incidents in the Poonch, Rajouri, and Doda areas of the Indian-administered part of Kashmir. Several people were reported missing.

In the northeastern state of Nagaland, a senior official told Reuters today that landslides caused by continuous rains killed nine people, and rescue teams recovered four bodies.

In the neighboring state of Assam, the state disaster management authority reported that one person died yesterday due to floods. Heavy rains damaged the lives of more than 57,000 people across seven districts in the state.

The India Meteorological Department said in a post on X (formerly Twitter): “The impacts of the monsoon rains are likely to continue in northwestern, eastern, and northeastern India in the coming days.”

In neighboring Himalayan Nepal, 27 people were killed and one person remains missing.
