China's Gold Balance

China's Gold Balance

Amid the flying bullets between Washington and Tehran, Beijing assumes the role of the impartial mediator who does not deceive his people, weighing the sparks of conflict with the scale of gold rather than the emotions of ideology. Its stance in the heat of this fierce war is neither one of blind partiality nor hasty alignment, but rather a “pure pragmatism” draped in the dignified robe of diplomacy.

In public, and before international forums, China raises its voice in protest against American strikes, condemning the infringement on Tehran’s sovereignty and warning against tearing apart the remaining fabric of international treaties. Yet, in the dark corridors of politics and behind closed towers, it delivers a firm rebuke to the Iranians, cautioning them against the dangers of playing with fire in the Strait of Hormuz or fanning the embers of nuclear ambitions, which could turn the region’s cauldrons into a blaze consuming both the green and the dry.

This is political craftsmanship in its most dazzling manifestation: “holding the stick from the middle.” It is neither American in identity and inclination nor Iranian in sentiment and direction; rather, it is purely Chinese, with eyes focused consciously only on the compass of supreme vital interests.

What does the Dragon seek behind this stern caution, if not a complex web of interests, decipherable only by the vital energy artery pulsing through its veins? For Beijing, the stability of Gulf waters and the guarantee of uninterrupted oil flow are matters of existence and national security that allow no compromise or equivocation.

Thus, Beijing is reluctant to jeopardize its extensive relations and massive investments in the Arab Gulf capitals, refusing to mortgage its strategic weight in response to Tehran’s whims or its ill-considered adventures. Stable economic alliances are more enduring in the calculations of major capitals than fleeting military gambles and narrow gains.

On the grand chessboard, China sees Washington’s preoccupation with the sands of the Middle East as an irreplaceable opportunity. As Washington is drained by the region’s heat, the Pacific front breathes a sigh of relief, and the immense pressure on Taiwan’s neck eases. Amidst this turbulence, Beijing presents itself as a wise dove of peace carrying an olive branch, in stark contrast to the “law of the jungle” and American military adventures.

As for the future of this crisis, it carries the premonitions of a new system, in which the region’s capitals awoke to a harsh reality: the American security umbrella no longer protects against the chill of sudden transformations. This opens the door for Beijing to extend the ropes of a calm, comprehensive “security engineering” that encompasses everyone under its shadow.

As for Tehran, if it continues to straiten the straits and threaten shipping lanes, it will clash with the fierce wrath of the Dragon, potentially undermining the edifice of the strategic partnership it has long boasted of. Beijing will not burn the cloak of its global economy to warm Tehran in its bitter winter with Washington. Nor should anyone assume that the Dragon’s veins will pulse with passion at the expense of its annual growth figures, which constitute its strength and substance.

Thus, China manages the entire scene with astute observation and cold harvesting of gains. Tomorrow, it will not hesitate to play the card of “reining in Tehran” as a heavy negotiating chip to exchange with Washington to dismantle the siege of fierce trade wars, relying on a cognitive heritage that understands that politics knows no permanence for friends, but revolves entirely around the movement of every drop of oil and the return of every bullet.
