Workers Exposed to Radiation at Koeberg Nuclear Power Plant in South Africa

South Africa’s Energy Minister, Gwede Mantashe, said in a press briefing on Sunday that several workers at the Koeberg nuclear power plant in South Africa were exposed to radiation during maintenance work, following three incidents that occurred over the past few weeks.

The Associated Press reported that Mantashe clarified the incidents were contained within the facility, emphasizing that no radioactive materials leaked into the surrounding environment and that there was no risk whatsoever to residents of nearby areas.

He added that the incidents took place at the plant, located about 30 kilometers north of Cape Town, on June 30, July 2, and July 7.

The minister attributed the cause to a temporary power outage that disrupted the plant’s ventilation systems, confirming that the radiation doses received by the workers were low—lower than the exposure from a routine dental X-ray.
