Ukrainian Drones Strike Deep Inside Russia
In one of the largest waves of drone attacks, Russia announced that Ukraine launched more than 370 drones toward the Moscow region, while another attack killed seven people at a logistics center belonging to one of Russia’s largest e-commerce companies.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said that air defense systems intercepted “most” of the drones from long distances, yet the attack reflects Ukraine’s growing capability to carry out long-range strikes using large swarms of drones.
In a separate attack, Tambov Governor Yevgeny Permyakov announced that seven workers were killed and 24 others injured after a logistics center belonging to Wildberries was targeted in the town of Kotovsk in western Russia. Wildberries is Russia’s largest e-commerce and logistics company.
A Wildberries warehouse in Elektrostal, in the Moscow suburbs, was hit by drone shrapnel, according to Governor Andrey Vorobyov, who reported one death and 37 injuries. Additionally, a fire broke out at an “oil warehouse in Noginsk,” according to the governor, who noted that two people were injured and a nearby maternity clinic was evacuated “for security reasons.”
Ukraine has intensified its attacks on Russian territory in recent months, specifically targeting infrastructure and energy facilities in an effort to constrain Moscow’s resources for funding its war effort.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on X that “two major logistics facilities in the Moscow and Tambov regions were hit, at distances of more than 500 and 700 kilometers from the front line,” adding that these centers were used “to supply components subject to sanctions that are used to produce drones and navigation equipment.”
The exchange of strikes highlights both sides’ increasing focus on logistics hubs, ports, and energy facilities as key elements in supporting military operations and the flow of supplies and trade. The targeting of a foreign ship off the port of Odesa also underscores the growing risks facing commercial navigation in the Black Sea as the war continues and attacks on coastal infrastructure expand.
Analysts believe that targeting transport and storage centers could disrupt both civilian and military supply chains, increasing economic pressure on Moscow, especially as the scope of attacks extends to areas far from the front lines.
Mutual drone attacks have become a defining feature of the war, with the number of drones used in each wave rising into the hundreds, in an attempt to overwhelm and exhaust air defenses.
