Atletico previously crowned World Champions

Spanish club Atletico Madrid, managed by Argentine coach Diego Simeone, stands alone as the team with the largest number of players in the World Cup final taking place in North America on Sunday, mirroring the situation in the previous two editions.

Six Argentine players who were part of the “Rojiblancos” squad during the 2025-2026 season will participate in this match: Julian Alvarez, Thiago Almada, Nahuel Molina, Juan Musso, Giuliano Simeone (the coach’s son), and Nico Gonzalez, on loan from Italian club Juventus.

The Madrid-based capital club is also represented by three Spanish players: Alex Baena, Carlos Yerena, and Marc Borel, along with new signing Alejandro Grimaldo, whom “Atleti” signed on June 30 amid the transfer window.

Thus, nine players under contract with the Madrid suburb club will feature in the 2026 World Cup final in New Jersey, near New York, with the addition of Grimaldo, who has yet to play for Atletico, and without Nico Gonzalez, whose loan spell has ended.

Last season’s fourth-placed La Liga side added the Italian winger from Torino to the roster published on its website, proudly noting that it is “the club with the most representation in FIFA-organized World Cup finals since the 1934 Italy edition.”
