Selection of Andy Burnham as Leader of the British Labour Party Paves the Way for Him to Take Office

Andy Burnham, known as the “King of the North,” was elected leader of Britain’s ruling Labour Party on Friday, a final step before he becomes the party’s seventh prime minister in a decade, pledging to halt the rise of the populist Reform Party.

Speaking at an “extraordinary conference” on Friday, Burnham said he was ready to take power and would work to bring hope to people in “forgotten places everywhere.”

The 56-year-old warned that this was Labour’s last chance to change the course of its destiny. He pledged to shift power away from Westminster, the heart of British politics, to different regions of the country, and to lead a “united” team to deliver the change the country “craves.”

Addressing a packed hall of Labour MPs and party officials, he said: “We are united, and we will put the strength derived from this unity at the service of the people and the places that have waited long for politics to give them hope again.”

He also praised Keir Starmer, the man who will succeed him as prime minister on Monday, as the party eagerly anticipates learning about the new government’s formation and its approach to running the country. Despite his repeated emphasis on devolving power to the regions and stopping divisive rhetoric against Labour MPs who do not share his views, much remains to be known about Burnham’s political priorities.

Burnham said he had not yet decided on his ministerial team but would ensure it “reflects all strands of our party and every local community.”

He added that Labour could counter the threat posed by both the Reform and Green parties. His message, which included a plan to curb the rise of the Reform Party, was praised by Labour MPs, who fear losing their parliamentary seats to the populist party led by Nigel Farage, who backed the Brexit campaign, in the next general election, due by 2029.

Reform has topped opinion polls for several months. However, some of its momentum has faded in recent weeks after Farage accepted funds from wealthy donors, potentially giving Burnham an opportunity to revive Labour’s fortunes. But he does not have much time. With the general election to be held within three years, Burnham will need to begin implementing some of his pledges as soon as possible.
