Spain are now just one match away from reclaiming the World Cup title after defeating France 2-0 in the 2026 World Cup semi-finals, securing a place in the final for only the second time in their history. This achievement highlights the significant success of head coach Luis de la Fuente.

Since taking charge in December 2022, the seasoned manager has been on a winning streak, leading La Roja to victory in the 2023 UEFA Nations League, the UEFA Euro 2024 championship, and the 2025 UEFA Nations League final. Now, Spain has a golden opportunity to add football’s most prestigious trophy to his list of accomplishments.

This success is built on years spent by the coach developing talent within Spain’s youth sectors, alongside his distinctive leadership style. These qualities were highlighted by Manolo Jiménez, Tito Blanco, Santi Denia, and Fernando Hierro in interviews with the official website of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).

Jiménez played alongside De la Fuente at Sevilla before the two reunited in the club’s youth setup.

Jiménez said of him: “Luis is a wonderful person and an amazing colleague above all else. He always had the desire to help young players and develop himself. He put in extraordinary effort and never gave up, earning everything he has achieved today as the head coach of Spanish football.”

Tito Blanco first met the coach in 2011 or 2012, when Blanco was serving as vice president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), and De la Fuente asked him for an opportunity to work within the federation.

Regarding this, Blanco stated: “He seemed like a genuine and very sincere man from our first meeting. When we worked together later, I discovered an exceptional personality with great strength. Therefore, when he was promoted to coach the senior national team after 10 years working with youth teams, we were fully aware that we had made the right decision without any risk. There was no better candidate for this role.”

Santi Denia worked alongside Coach De la Fuente for 14 years, giving them a golden opportunity to closely observe successive generations of players and develop their skills.

Speaking about De la Fuente’s strengths, Denia said: “Luis is skilled at managing groups, understanding players’ mindsets, guiding them, and selecting the best elements for each match. He added his own touch to the Spanish playing identity, aligning it with the players’ capabilities. He believes in this approach more than anyone else.”

Former legendary defender Fernando Hierro shared this vision, based on his work with De la Fuente at the federation. He emphasized that the coach’s calm demeanor and deep knowledge of the environment surrounding Spanish national teams and players helped create a unique sense of cohesion and harmony within the squad.

Hierro said: “This national team lives as one tight-knit family. The players enjoy spending time together, and the atmosphere is extremely cheerful and positive. This is doubly important in World Cup tournaments, given the long training camps and constant nervous pressure. This is a testament to the significant work Luis did before the tournament began.”
