Iraqi envoy heads to Qatar to convey condolences on the passing of the Amir al-Walid

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi traveled to Qatar on Wednesday to offer condolences on the death of former Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Tehran announced.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry stated in a press release that Araghchi would “hold talks with Qatari officials and extend condolences” to the former Emir.

The visit comes amid renewed hostilities between Iran and the United States, undermining diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a lasting end to the war that erupted on February 28 following Israeli-American strikes.

The confrontation resumed on July 7 after attacks targeted ships in the Gulf and were attributed to Iran. Since then, the pace of strikes has reached an unprecedented level since the ceasefire in April.

The US military primarily targets coastal areas overlooking the Strait of Hormuz, which Tehran insists it controls. In response, Iranian forces are bombing US targets in the region.

Qatar, which is mediating talks with the United States alongside Pakistan and hosts the largest US base in the Middle East, was among the countries affected by the strikes.
