Iraqi Prime Minister: No Armed Factions in Iraq After September 30

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi affirmed, during his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday, that his government is committed to centralizing weapons in the hands of the state, announcing that no armed factions will be permitted to bear arms after September 30. This statement was made as part of a visit aimed at launching a new strategic partnership with the United States and enhancing economic and investment cooperation between the two countries.
Al-Zaidi’s remarks came during his first official visit to the United States, which carries political and economic dimensions, as Baghdad seeks to expand cooperation with Washington and attract U.S. investments in the energy, oil, gas, and infrastructure sectors, while maintaining a balance in its regional relations.
He clarified that there would be no justification for the existence of armed factions after this deadline, stating, “After September 30, there is no need for any armed factions in Iraq.”
