Moscow summoned the German ambassador on Monday to protest Berlin’s support for Ukraine, as Kyiv intensified its retaliatory strikes against Russia.
Ukraine targeted Russian energy infrastructure as far as the Urals and Siberia, leading to fuel shortages in the world’s third-largest oil producer.
A statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry said that the German ambassador to Moscow, Alexander Graf Lambsdorff, was informed that “it is unacceptable to increase German support for Kyiv... including by concluding military and military-technical agreements.”
The ministry also protested what it described as “direct arms supplies and the establishment of joint projects,” arguing that the purpose of such measures was to create “means to launch attacks on civilian targets within Russia.”
About 90 percent of Russian regions have been experiencing fuel rationing or shortages since June, with several areas imposing rationing at gas stations and banning storage, according to officials and local media reports.
Ukraine has been targeting Russian oil and gas facilities in the ongoing four-and-a-half-year war, in strikes it says are in response to Russian attacks on its civilians.
Kyiv appears to have enhanced its capabilities this year in conducting drone strikes and improving their precision, hitting oil refineries deep inside Russia as far as Omsk in Siberia.
Earlier on Monday, Berlin had summoned the Russian ambassador to protest cyberattacks attributed to Moscow that targeted the European Union, which imposed new sanctions on Russia in coordination with Britain in the wake of these attacks.
