Italian Yannick Sinner wins Wimbledon title for the second consecutive year

Italian top-ranked player Jannik Sinner claimed the men’s singles title at Wimbledon, one of the Grand Slam tournaments, for the second consecutive year by defeating German Alexander Zverev in the final on Sunday.

Zverev, the world’s third-ranked player, took the first set 7-6 (9-7) after 65 minutes of play, but Sinner responded strongly, winning the next three sets 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, and 6-4. The victory, secured after a hard-fought 3-hour and 46-minute match on grass, marked Sinner’s second consecutive Wimbledon title.

The Italian star repeated the scenario of last year’s 2025 final, when he overturned a set deficit to defeat second-ranked Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, who missed this year’s edition due to injury.

At 24, Sinner secured his fifth Grand Slam title and his first of 2026, after eliminating the most decorated major champion, Serbian Novak Djokovic, in the semifinals.

Sinner also extended his dominant head-to-head record against Zverev, securing his tenth consecutive win over the German, who appeared affected by a knee injury.

Zverev entered the tournament with high morale after winning his first Grand Slam title at the French Open the previous month. Sinner, by contrast, was unexpectedly eliminated in the second round by Argentine Juan Manuel Cerundolo.

Taking advantage of Alcaraz’s absence from both Roland Garros and Wimbledon due to injury, Zverev reached the finals of both tournaments, securing a jump to second place in the world rankings, which will be released on Monday, surpassing Alcaraz.

However, the 29-year-old’s hopes of becoming the first player born in the 1990s to win the Wimbledon men’s singles title were dashed.

Meanwhile, Sinner’s morale has risen as he prepares for the hard-court season leading up to the US Open, scheduled from August 30 to September 13.

It remains unclear whether Alcaraz will be ready to compete at the US Open following his recovery from a wrist injury.
