Election of Abdul Hamid al-Awak as President of the Syrian People's Council

Abdul Hamid al-Awak won the post of Speaker of the Syrian People’s Assembly in elections held today, Sunday, marking the first parliamentary election in Syria following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

Deputy Speaker Osama Assaf announced that Abdul Hamid al-Awak was elected Speaker of the People’s Assembly after receiving 99 votes, while MP Muayad Qablawi received 75 votes.

Al-Awak, a native of Al-Hasakah Governorate, holds a PhD in administrative law. He previously worked as a judge and university professor, and was appointed as a member of the committee tasked with drafting the constitutional declaration.

Following the election of the Speaker, the People’s Assembly proceeded to elect two deputy speakers. Eight candidates, including four women, ran for the positions. Among the candidates was Abdul Hakim Bashar, a member of the Syrian National Coalition and part of the Kurdish component.
