Atletico Madrid strengthens its squad with Danish player Højbjerg

Atletico Madrid have bolstered their squad by signing Danish international defensive midfielder Morten Hjulmand from Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon, according to the fourth-placed team in last season’s La Liga.

In a statement published on its website, Atletico praised the “physical strength of the Danish player, his ability to win back possession, and his deep understanding of the game.”

After playing in his home country and Austria, Hjulmand moved to Italian club Lecce in 2012, where, at the age of 23, he became the second-youngest player to wear the captain’s armband in Serie A, after Francesco Totti with Roma.

This is Atletico Madrid’s second transfer during the current transfer window, following the arrival of Spanish international left-back Alejandro Grimaldo from German club Bayer Leverkusen, while the club is also preparing to sign South Korean attacking midfielder Lee Kang-in from French champions and European titleholders Paris Saint-Germain.
