Scaloni compares 39-year-old Messi to 'The Machine'

Lionel Scaloni, Argentina’s coach, said he was not surprised by Lionel Messi’s physical condition at age 39, reiterating his belief that the team captain will remain the best player in the world as long as he decides to keep playing.
Messi played a pivotal role in Argentina’s World Cup campaign, scoring eight goals to equal French star Kylian Mbappé, and leading his side to a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory over Egypt in the Round of 16 after trailing 2-0 with 11 minutes remaining.
The Inter Miami forward, who turned 39 last month, participated in the tournament amid questions about his fitness following a recent muscle injury. He scored one goal and provided an assist for Cristian Romero in Argentina’s match against Egypt.
Scaloni said on Friday, “Leo runs almost the same amount in every match. Physically, it’s true that he has been working with a fitness coach and it has paid off, but in terms of numbers, I don’t think much has changed.” He added, “What is clear is that he gives everything he has. When he gives everything and feels he can create danger, he becomes a machine.”
He noted that those expecting age to affect Messi’s performance do not know the player well enough, continuing, “This doesn’t surprise me. Perhaps those who don’t know him expected him not to be at this level at 39, but I don’t know how many times I’ve said it: as long as he wants to play, he will remain the best. I believe that, not because I am his coach.”
Scaloni added, “There are no easy opponents, and we all know that. They are a very good team. They compete with the best national teams and always come out on top. They may win or lose, but they always deliver a competitive performance. They have a rich World Cup tradition and experienced players, and they are physically strong.”
