The Iranian Foreign Ministry announced on Wednesday that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his Qatari counterpart, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, stressed during a phone call the necessity of avoiding an escalation of tensions in the region.
The ministry clarified that the two sides discussed regional developments during the call, “particularly the current events in the Strait of Hormuz,” and emphasized the importance of “using diplomatic capabilities to resolve regional issues, and the need to keep communication and coordination channels open to avoid escalating tensions in the region.”
The call came after the United States and Iran exchanged heavy strikes in the wake of attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz. One of these ships was a Qatari tanker, and Doha held Tehran responsible for the attack.
