Yuri Ushakov, a Kremlin adviser, said early on Sunday that U.S. President Donald Trump offered, during a nearly 90-minute phone call with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, assistance in finding a solution to the war in Ukraine.
Ushakov added that Trump made this offer in the context of his participation this week in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit in Turkey.
He was referring to long-range Ukrainian strikes on Russian targets, primarily linked to the oil sector, which have caused fuel shortages in several Russian regions.
Ushakov said Putin “described the real situation on the battlefield, where the Russian armed forces are advancing confidently and liberating one area after another.”
Russian military commanders informed Putin on Friday that Russian forces had captured the strategically important city of Kostyantynivka in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine.
President Volodymyr Zelensky and the Ukrainian General Staff denied this claim on Saturday, stating that Ukrainian forces still control the city.
Ukraine rejects this assertion, and Zelensky urged Putin last month to hold a bilateral meeting with him, but the Russian president declined.
Ushakov conveyed Trump’s statement that U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner would continue their efforts to mediate a settlement and were prepared to make another visit to Moscow. U.S. diplomatic efforts have effectively stalled, with Washington focusing on the conflict with Iran.
Ushakov said that during the call, Putin expressed hope that U.S. diplomatic efforts in the conflict with Iran would lead to “long-term, mutually acceptable solutions to the key issues of settlement.”
Zelensky described his conversation with the U.S. president as “very good” in a post on his Telegram account, which included a discussion about the front line stretching 1,200 kilometers.
He said, “There is a real possibility of ending this war, and U.S. resolve will be of crucial importance.” Zelensky added that he and Trump agreed to continue discussions during the NATO summit.
