UK Foreign Secretary Calls for End to Violence in Sudan

British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper called for an end to the violence in Sudan and warned that the city of Omdurman must not become the site of the next senseless tragedy.

Ahead of an urgent debate at the United Nations Human Rights Council on Friday, Cooper urged the international community to act “in unity and determination,” according to the British Press Association (AP Media) today.

She added, “Over the past weeks, dozens of drones have bombed the city of Omdurman in Sudan, targeting relief workers, resulting in civilian deaths and blocking access to essential services. We have seen this deadly pattern before. The international community cannot ignore it.”

She continued, “Last year, the world failed the people of El Fasher, where horrific atrocities occurred. Omdurman must not become the next senseless tragedy.”

Drone strikes killed more than 1,000 civilians in the war-torn country in the first five months of 2026, according to a former senior United Nations official.

Fighting between the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Army erupted in April 2023 and escalated into a nationwide war.
