The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, announced on Friday that options for reducing the level of Iran’s enriched nuclear material or transferring it out of the country are technical solutions available and on the table, emphasizing that their implementation requires official approval from Tehran.

Grossi’s remarks came amid strong indications that the United States and Iran are nearing a new framework agreement and have begun an initial formal exchange of communications paving the way for the return of IAEA inspectors to Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Grossi clarified that the IAEA’s current assessments indicate that Iran’s nuclear material has not been moved from its sites since the last inspection in 2025, adding that the agency urgently needs direct field access to fully verify and confirm these assessments.

The Director General stressed that “there is no doubt about the existence of an agreement stipulating a clear inspection mechanism,” expressing hope that IAEA teams would return to Iran very soon. Grossi added that the presence of inspectors on the ground is a fundamental pillar for granting any anticipated US-Iran agreement the credibility and reliability required by the international community.
