Argentine star Lionel Messi achieved a new milestone by becoming the first player in Major League Soccer history to win the Golden Boot award for top scorer in two consecutive seasons.
Despite failing to score in Inter Miami’s 3-3 draw with Charlotte FC on Saturday, the 39-year-old Messi finished the season with 26 goals, finishing four goals ahead of Peter Moses and five goals ahead of Englishman Sam Surridge, who placed third.
Messi also provided 17 assists, ending the season with 43 goal contributions, the highest total in the competition.
Messi, who announced his retirement from international duty with the Argentina national team last month, became only the sixth player to win the MLS Golden Boot twice, joining a list that includes former Southampton striker Bradley Wright-Phillips and former Everton and Portsmouth winger Bafetimbi Gomis.
Despite Messi’s brilliance, Inter Miami finished second in the Eastern Conference, behind Nashville, which is led by Sam Surridge.
