Technical reports warn that devices such as power banks and electronic cigarettes may cause inspection delays due to lithium battery restrictions

Technical reports have warned that some electronic devices carried by travelers may cause delays during airport security screening, even though they are permitted, due to restrictions related to lithium batteries and the risks of overheating and ignition.

According to a report published by Engadget, the most prominent devices include power banks, electronic cigarettes, smart bags, electric toothbrushes, and mobile phones, with varying controls depending on the airline.

Power banks are subject to a maximum limit of 100 watt-hours and must be carried in carry-on luggage, not in checked baggage. A battery with a capacity of 20,000 milliampere-hours has an energy level of approximately 74 watt-hours, while larger batteries may require prior approval, with a maximum of two batteries per passenger. Non-rechargeable metallic lithium batteries must not exceed two grams of lithium content per battery.

Rules require passengers to carry electronic cigarettes in the cabin, prohibiting their use and charging during the flight. Southwest Airlines allows two devices per passenger.

Smart bags raise additional concerns due to their built-in batteries, which must be removed before the bag is placed in the aircraft hold. Some airlines, including American Airlines and Delta Air Lines, ban certain types of electric ride-on bags. Electric toothbrushes may trigger additional screening if they vibrate or make noise due to accidental activation.

Smartphones may need to be removed and turned on during screening. The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 remains banned due to the risk of its battery catching fire.

The report emphasized the importance of reviewing airline instructions in advance and verifying battery capacities and device storage methods to avoid confiscation or delays at security checkpoints.
