The Jordanian Public Security Directorate described in a statement on Thursday the stabbing incident that resulted in the death of a security officer and injured another in front of the Sri Lankan embassy in Amman as a “cowardly terrorist act.”
The statement mourned the “martyrdom of Corporal Jawad Ali Al-Salayta in a cowardly terrorist act while performing his official duties in the capital,” adding that “one officer was injured.”
Al-Salayta was killed and another security officer was injured in a sharp-object attack in front of the Sri Lankan embassy in Amman, with the attacker apprehended immediately, according to official sources.
The Jordan News Agency (Petra) quoted the Public Prosecutor at the State Security Court, Brigadier Military Judge Ahmad Tal’at Shihaltough, stating that the Public Prosecutor’s Office at the State Security Court has initiated investigative procedures regarding the terrorist attack on Public Security officers in Amman.
Government Spokesman and Minister of Communications, Dr. Mohammed Al-Momani, affirmed that “attacking security officers while they are performing their duties is an attack on the dignity of the state and the rule of law, and an attack on every Jordanian man and woman. We will not show leniency toward any aggressor or act targeting Jordan and Jordanians.”
He stated that the security and stability of the homeland are above all else, and that the state and its institutions are capable of protecting its citizens and residents on its soil, and of enforcing the law firmly against anyone who transgresses or attacks. Al-Momani noted that the Prime Minister is closely monitoring the response of the relevant agencies to this incident, with preliminary investigations indicating it was a cowardly terrorist act, and emphasized the need for all concerned parties to swiftly uncover the circumstances and motives behind it and to take the necessary legal action against all those involved.
