U.S. local media reported on Wednesday that Democratic candidate Abdulrahman Al-Sayed, known as “Abdul,” won the U.S. Senate race in Michigan after defeating his Republican opponent, Mike Rogers, becoming the first Muslim elected to the Senate in U.S. history.
Fox News, the American news network, reported via its official account on the social media platform X that estimates from its Decision Desk showed Al-Sayed winning the race, which took place yesterday as part of the U.S. midterm elections.
Al-Sayed expressed his gratitude to voters for their support and trust, affirming that he would strive to provide leadership worthy of that confidence.
Al-Sayed’s victory comes in the seat currently held by Democratic Senator Gary Peters, who decided not to seek re-election.
