U.S. President Donald Trump affirmed that he is fully prepared to accept the results of the midterm elections. In comments to The New York Times, he added, “We will work with the Democrats and look forward to cooperating with them, and perhaps we will reach mutual understandings.” At the same time, the U.S. president announced his readiness to use his veto power on any Democratic legislation “if necessary” should the Democratic Party gain control of Congress in the midterm elections. Trump told CBS News, in response to a question about what would happen if the Democrats took control of the House of Representatives during the final two years of his presidential term, “I have veto power. It is an absolute power, and I am prepared to use it if necessary.”
He expressed confidence in advancing his agenda over the next two years regardless of the midterm results, noting that the veto power might push the Democrats, if they achieve electoral gains, to reach agreements with him. On this point, he said, “Look at history: when you use the veto for a few months, the other side comes and says, ‘We have to reach an agreement.’”
When asked whether the coming period would be marked by confrontation with the Democrats if they win the House or both chambers, Trump said he might expand the use of his executive powers if Democrats attempt to restrict his moves from within Congress. He emphasized that he possesses a “strong presidency” that enables him to accomplish a great deal.
Regarding the midterm elections, Trump expressed his belief that he had done his utmost to support Republicans nationwide in recent weeks, noting that his efforts helped change the course of the elections, turning what could have been a “blue wave” into a “closer contest.”
Later, the U.S. president posted on his Truth Social account an image of a red hat with the word “Veto” written on it, following the Democrats’ majority in the Senate and their apparent move toward a majority in the House as well. In a subsequent post, Trump said, “I will turn into a political analyst—with all the positive and negative aspects that entails—to examine the reasons for these candidates’ victories or defeats.”
Trump’s comments came after the Democrats secured a majority in the Senate by winning 51 of the 100 seats, following their victories in Iowa, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, and Texas, according to preliminary results.
