Fears of errors by domestic robots are no longer mere science fiction scenarios, after two companies in the UK launched specialized insurance coverage for humanoid robots in preparation for their entry into daily life.
Tokio Marine HCC International, in collaboration with insurance broker Adrian Flux, announced the launch of what it describes as the first insurance of its kind for domestic robots in the United Kingdom.
The policy covers protection against damage and theft of the robot, as well as compensation for sudden damages it may cause to furniture and property, in addition to civil liability if it injures a person or damages their property.
Notably, the insurance includes an emergency service to retrieve or safely disable the robot in the event of a sudden malfunction, to mitigate potential risks.
The two companies expect humanoid robots to begin arriving in British homes by 2027, while early models for pre-order have been offered in the United States at prices approaching $20,000.
Jerry Buck, Managing Director of Adrian Flux, clarified that the aim is to determine liability when errors occur, emphasizing that coverage will evolve alongside technological advancements and the emergence of new risks.
