Kuwait’s National Director of Special Olympics and founder of the Kuwaiti Sports Club for Intellectual Disabilities, Al-Amal, Rahab Boursali, affirmed on Wednesday the Special Olympics’ commitment to providing comprehensive sports and rehabilitation programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities across all age groups, thereby contributing to the development of their abilities, honing their talents, and enhancing their participation in society.
This statement came in an interview with the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on the sidelines of the Kuwaiti Sports Club for Intellectual Disabilities, Al-Amal, which serves as the official representative of Special Olympics Kuwait, in organizing a sports activity program for young players aimed at developing their physical and motor skills, strengthening their sports and social abilities, and reinforcing the concept of social inclusion. The program was conducted in collaboration with several schools and training and rehabilitation centers for individuals with intellectual disabilities, as well as their peers without disabilities.
Boursali stated that the one-day program targeted children aged 4 to 8, considering them the foundation for preparing a new generation of qualified players who will join Special Olympics programs and competitions in the future.
She added that the program combined sports, educational, and interactive activities designed to develop fine and gross motor skills, stimulate mental and cognitive abilities, and enhance communication and social interaction skills among children through an encouraging environment that respects individual differences and provides each child with the opportunity to showcase their potential and capabilities.
The event, held at the Capital Mall, saw the participation of approximately 80 children with intellectual disabilities and their peers without disabilities in a range of joint sports, sensory, and motor activities. This initiative underscores the importance of social inclusion and providing an inclusive environment that offers all children equal opportunities to learn, play, interact, and develop skills, while promoting a culture of accepting differences and respecting diversity within society.
