Syria and Jordan have agreed to establish a joint security committee to examine the details and facts of Jordan’s recent military operations and to follow up on their repercussions, in a move aimed at enhancing field and intelligence coordination between the two countries to confront terrorist threats and protect civilians, while reaffirming respect for Syrian sovereignty and the strength of relations between Damascus and Amman.

According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the agreement came during a telephone call between Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Asaad al-Shaybani and Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi, during which they discussed the repercussions of the airstrikes carried out by the Jordanian Armed Forces against positions of the “Daesh” (ISIS) group, and the resulting civilian casualties.

During the call, the two ministers emphasized the historical depth of the distinguished fraternal relations linking the two countries and their peoples, and their shared commitment to strengthening and developing these ties across various fields, and to overcoming any issues that might strain them through frank and responsible fraternal dialogue, based on a firm conviction in the interdependence of the two countries’ security and their shared destiny.

Safadi stressed Jordan’s full respect for Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, security, stability, and the safety of its citizens. He affirmed that Jordan considers Syria’s security and stability an integral part of its own, and expressed pride in the unprecedented close cooperation and coordination that have characterized the historic fraternal relations between the two countries and their peoples.

The two ministers discussed the repercussions of the airstrikes conducted by the Jordanian Armed Forces the previous day against positions of the “Daesh” terrorist organization. Safadi stated that these operations were based on field intelligence and aimed at neutralizing confirmed threats and imminent terrorist operations targeting Jordan’s security. He expressed deep regret and sorrow over the loss of innocent civilian lives during these operations against Daesh, which poses a common threat to both countries, and offered his sincerest condolences and sympathies to the fraternal Syrian people, along with wishes for the swift recovery of the injured.

Safadi emphasized that Jordan is as committed to the safety of Syrian citizens as it is to the safety of its own nationals.

Both ministers also stressed that Jordanian-Syrian relations are witnessing close cooperation to address common challenges, foremost among them combating terrorism and curbing cross-border smuggling of drugs and weapons through effective and sustainable institutional channels.

Safadi and al-Shaybani affirmed that, “Recognizing the importance of direct field and security coordination in their joint efforts to combat terrorism and protect civilians, and to ensure the highest levels of accuracy and transparency, the two ministers agreed to establish a joint security committee to ascertain all details and facts of the recent operations and follow up on their repercussions, and to develop mechanisms for field and intelligence coordination to address terrorist threats, thereby safeguarding Syrian sovereignty and protecting the lives of innocent civilians, and reflecting the strength and resilience of the fraternal relations between the two countries and their peoples.”
