The Public Prosecution of the State of Kuwait participated in the regional workshop on the implementation of the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism (ICSANT), held in the Spanish capital, Madrid, and organized by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in cooperation with the Government of the Kingdom of Spain and the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL), with the participation of representatives from the competent authorities of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
Representing the Public Prosecution at the workshop was Fahad Al-Mutairi, Director of the Public Prosecution for State Security Crimes and Terrorism and Its Financing, who presented an overview of Kuwait’s experience in implementing the ICSANT, the national legal framework and legal measures taken to enforce its provisions, as well as the role of competent authorities in combating related crimes.
The workshop addressed the legal and practical aspects of countering nuclear terrorism, through a virtual exercise simulating procedures for detecting and seizing nuclear and radioactive materials, investigating related crimes, and prosecuting perpetrators. It also discussed mechanisms for international cooperation and the exchange of information and evidence, as well as relevant legal and procedural challenges.
This participation aligns with the Public Prosecution’s commitment to enhancing international judicial cooperation, exchanging expertise and best practices, and developing legal and practical capacities in the field of counter-terrorism, thereby supporting Kuwait’s efforts to fulfill its international obligations.
