The Speaker of the Swedish Parliament, Andreas Norlén, announced yesterday that he has tasked the leader of the Centre Party, Elisabeth Svantesson, with forming a government that includes parties from both the right and the left, more than a month after elections in which the left won a narrow majority but failed to form a government.
Norlén said at a press conference, “These consultations have led me to ask Elisabeth Svantesson to assess the conditions necessary to form a government that can gain parliamentary approval.”
In the parliamentary elections held on September 13, the left-wing opposition bloc in Sweden edged out the right-wing bloc led by outgoing Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson by just three seats. However, opposition leader Magdalena Andersson, head of the Social Democratic Party, failed twice to form a left-wing government.
The Speaker added that Svantesson’s task is to explore the possibility of forming a centrist coalition capable of governing. She is expected to present the results of her consultations by October 26.
Sweden has previously experienced similar political crises: it took 37 days to form a government after the 2022 elections, and 134 days after the 2018 elections.
