The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has invited companies and universities to propose technologies that would support the establishment of a long-term human presence near the Moon’s south pole.
The required technologies include systems for generating and storing energy, extracting oxygen chemically bound in lunar rocks and regolith, and manufacturing materials and tools in space rather than continuously transporting them from Earth.
The agency is also seeking power generators capable of operating in the Moon’s dark and dusty regions, as well as technologies that utilize local resources for construction and operations.
The announcement does not mean that NASA has already begun extracting oxygen or building a lunar base; rather, it is soliciting proposals to develop and test solutions in preparation for their use in future missions.
