Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled on Thursday a vehicle he described as a “flying car,” equipped with a propulsion system that enables it to lift into the air, during a live-streamed event held at a SpaceX facility.
To date, technical and regulatory challenges have prevented the flying-car sector, which has received widespread promotion, from taking off, according to the Agence France-Presse.
Musk revealed his new “Roadster” sports car at an event held at a SpaceX rocket testing facility in Texas, United States.
During a live presentation streamed via Tesla’s X account, the car launched from a steep ramp before landing on its wheels.
“Flying cars are a reality,” Musk said during the event. He added that the vehicle’s success was “not guaranteed,” but he predicted it would “most likely succeed.”
Musk explained that the car is equipped with “ultra-high-pressure air tanks” that provide the thrust needed to lift it into the air.
The technology billionaire described the innovation as the result of “collaboration between the world’s best car company and the world’s best rocket company,” referring to Tesla and SpaceX.
He said production of the car would begin in 2028.
American aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss unveiled the first prototype of a flying car in 1917.
However, the development of practical designs did not attract serious attention until recent years, driven by advances in electric motor technology and high-performance batteries.
