Savoy experts announce the mountain's height increase is due to ice cover, not rock growth

Recent scientific measurements have revealed a new change in the height of Mont Blanc, the highest peak in Western Europe, which now stands at 4,807.47 meters above sea level—an increase of 1.88 meters compared to 2023. This does not, however, indicate any growth in the mountain’s rock mass.

Experts from the French Haute-Savoie region announced the results of measurements taken on September 17, explaining that the change is due to snow and ice cover, which is influenced by winds, precipitation, and weather conditions.

The true rocky summit lies at an elevation of approximately 4,792 meters, while the thickness of the frozen layers above it constantly changes.

Notably, despite the increase in height compared to 2023, the mountain has lost about 1.29 meters from its recorded height in 2025, reflecting the natural fluctuations experienced by its summit.

This year, researchers used advanced technologies, including ground-penetrating radar, to study ice thickness and determine the shape of the hidden rocky surface beneath it.

Experts emphasized that a single measurement is insufficient to draw conclusions about global warming, stressing the importance of monitoring changes over the long term.

Regular measurements of the summit have been conducted since 2001, with the aim of understanding its height evolution and the factors influencing it.
