Former Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati told visitors in Tripoli that he hoped intensive diplomatic contacts would protect Lebanon from the repercussions of the serious escalation in the region and preserve a minimum level of internal stability. He expressed hope that upcoming rounds of negotiations would lead to the implementation of the Framework Agreement, an Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon, the return of displaced persons to their villages and towns, and an end to systematic demolition operations.
He emphasized that the current priority is to establish an internal Lebanese consensus that would bolster Lebanon’s diplomatic stance, stressing the importance of adhering to international law and United Nations resolutions, particularly those concerning stability in southern Lebanon.
When asked about the risks of escalation and the possibility that its repercussions could spread to Lebanon, he called on all parties to exercise restraint, affirming that de-escalation and dialogue are the primary means to establish the desired stability and peace. He noted that while achieving this will take time, it is an unavoidable necessity for the stability and development of the region.
Regarding the ongoing investigations into the seized explosives, he said, “We cannot anticipate the results of the ongoing investigations until they are completed and all circumstances are clarified. However, in any case, this act is unacceptable and threatens national security, at a time when we most need to strengthen state authority, which must be solely responsible for protecting Lebanese citizens and safeguarding national sovereignty.”
Mikati assessed the international diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions, extending his thanks to the United States and other friendly countries for their continuous efforts to reach and maintain a comprehensive ceasefire and return to the negotiating table to address the situation. He stressed that such cooperation is essential to preserve stability in Lebanon and the region.
During his meeting with Tripoli Port Director Ahmed Tamer, President Mikati stated that the accession of Tripoli Port, like Beirut Port, to the club of ports within the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor would give Lebanon a strong impetus to enhance its position in regional and international trade flows. It would also allow the country to leverage its geographic location on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea and its potential to serve as a connecting link between Arab, European, and Asian markets.
