A dog may sleep in a warm home in Germany or accompany hunters through the forests of Vanuatu and Madagascar, yet its relationship with humans appears strikingly similar across distances and cultural differences, according to a study published in the journal Scientific Reports.

The finding was reached by a team led by researchers from the University of Jena and the Max Planck Institute in Germany, after they studied more than 150 human-dog pairs across five rural settings: Germany, Mongolia, Madagascar, Vanuatu, and the Shipibo-Konibo communities in the Peruvian Amazon.

The researchers subjected the dogs to six tests, which included their ability to follow human gestures, seek help when facing a difficult problem, understand a person’s reaction to something unusual, and guide a human to the location of hidden food.

The results showed that dogs in different environments were able to observe and communicate with humans in similar ways. Moreover, more than 90% of their owners across all countries reported that they could rely on their dogs and that the animals tried to protect them in dangerous situations.

However, culture also left its mark: German dogs responded more quickly to commands, while Vanuatu hunters were better at reading their dogs’ signals, likely due to their reliance on them for tracking wild boars in dense forests.
