Mansour Al-Sultan: The Director of the Traffic Awareness Department, Colonel Fahd Al-Eissa, announced the implementation of intensive traffic campaigns targeting cars and motorcycles belonging to non-compliant delivery companies, starting next Sunday, October 18. He emphasized that these campaigns aim to enforce traffic violations, enhance adherence to traffic rules, and curb behaviors that threaten the safety of road users.
During an interview on Radio’s Second Program, Al-Eissa confirmed that the campaigns would cover cars and motorcycles used in delivery activities, noting that any vehicle or motorcycle found in violation may be impounded for a period of no less than 60 days, in accordance with established procedures.
He clarified that the measures would not be limited to offending drivers but would also extend to companies that fail to cooperate with the General Directorate of Traffic in educating their employees and reducing violations. He pointed out that if a company does not cooperate and its drivers accumulate a significant number of violations, appropriate administrative actions will be taken against the company.
Al-Eissa added that the General Directorate of Traffic held a meeting with delivery company owners, during which video footage was shown of delivery cars and motorcycles committing traffic violations. The goal was to familiarize company officials with the most prominent incorrect behaviors and their dangers to road users.
He indicated that the most commonly observed violations included changing lanes and switching between lanes without signaling, running red lights, overtaking vehicles stopped at traffic signals, and driving on sidewalks and pedestrian bridges. These practices can disrupt traffic flow and lead to accidents.
The meeting discussed mechanisms for addressing these violations, their causes, and appropriate measures to mitigate them. Al-Eissa stressed the importance of cooperation between delivery companies and the General Directorate of Traffic, as well as monitoring driver behavior and ensuring compliance with traffic rules and regulations.
Al-Eissa explained that the Directorate has requested delivery company owners to organize awareness lectures for their employees to educate them on safe driving practices, violations to avoid, and their responsibilities while using the road.
He also revealed that certain roads have been designated as off-limits to motorcycles belonging to delivery companies, urging motorcycle drivers to adhere to permitted routes and regulations governing their movement.
On another note, Al-Eissa stated that the Central Control Room monitors roads through approximately 370 modern and advanced cameras used to track traffic flow, detect violations, and record them, thereby supporting traffic officers’ efforts to apprehend violators and enhance road safety.
He noted that traffic surveillance relies on integrating field campaigns with modern monitoring tools, which helps identify behaviors that affect traffic flow or pose risks to road users.
Regarding traffic light timing, Al-Eissa clarified that signal timings at intersections are determined by studies conducted by the Central Control Room, based on traffic density on intersecting roads and vehicle volume, contributing to traffic organization according to the specific traffic data for each road.
