A Kuwaiti woman’s attempt to shield her son from the consequences of a traffic accident has turned into a new case under suspicion of forgery in an official document, after surveillance cameras revealed that her account of the driver’s identity did not match the recordings. Her effort to take responsibility on his behalf ended with her confessing the truth during the investigation.
In detail, a security source said a Kuwaiti national reported that her vehicle had been struck by another vehicle, whose driver—a young man wearing traditional national attire—fled the scene.
The source added that investigators inquired about the vehicle shown in the recordings, which turned out to be registered under a woman’s name. When summoned, she stated that she was the one driving at the time of the accident, not the young man mentioned by the complainant, and that she had left the scene without noticing the collision.
The source clarified that, amid conflicting statements, surveillance footage was reviewed, showing that the driver was wearing a dishdasha (traditional robe), raising doubts about the mother’s claims.
Consequently, she was re-summoned and confronted with the findings of the investigation and the recordings. She retracted her previous statements and admitted that her son was driving at the time of the accident, and that she had falsely claimed to be the driver out of fear for him and a desire to protect him from the repercussions of the incident.
When questioned, the son admitted he was behind the wheel at the time of the accident, confirming that his mother had falsely claimed to be driving to prevent his involvement. The source further stated that an additional investigation would be conducted with the young man to determine the reasons for his unexplained flight.
The source noted that, in light of the new confessions, the statements and declarations made by the mother before the investigative authority were separated from the original traffic accident file, and a separate case was opened under the charge of “forgery in an official document.”
