6.3-magnitude earthquake strikes Vanuatu islands in the Pacific

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck the Pacific nation of Vanuatu yesterday, according to the US Geological Survey. The US Observatory reported that the epicenter was located approximately 110 kilometers east of Luganville, the country’s second-largest city. Vanuatu, a low-lying archipelago situated on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” experiences intense volcanic and seismic activity due to the convergence of tectonic plates. Preliminary data placed the epicenter of the quake, which occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, at the intersection of 15.48 degrees south latitude and 168.18 degrees east longitude.
