British counter-terrorism police arrested a seventh suspect yesterday as part of the investigation into the incident that occurred in late September near the Fairford military base in southwest England, which is used by the U.S. military. The United States withdrew its aircraft stationed at the site due to “threats” linked to Iran, according to U.S. President Donald Trump.
In a statement, British police said a 22-year-old British man was arrested yesterday in central London on suspicion of “preparing acts of terrorism.” Searches were conducted at a residence in the same area.
Five men, all British, were arrested at the scene of the incident that took place on Sunday, September 27. A sixth man, who holds both British and Iranian citizenship, was arrested on October 1.
Police were called to the base in southwest England on September 27 after being informed of “suspicious” activity involving a group of men and several small trucks. Following this, 85 homes near the airbase, which the United States had used to launch strikes on Iran, were evacuated.
Lawrence Taylor, head of the National Counter-Terrorism Headquarters, reported that investigators found no explosives inside the small trucks, but rather quantities of petrol.
Vicky Evans, the National Coordination Lead for Counter-Terrorism Policing, said in a statement yesterday, as quoted by the agency, “Our specialist teams continue to follow multiple lines of inquiry to clarify the circumstances surrounding the events near Fairford base.”
She added, “We are working tirelessly to determine the motives behind the events in Gloucestershire, and we remain committed to examining all possible hypotheses.”
