Leaks shake FIFA over Congo goalkeeper's World Cup participation

The participation of Lionel Mbasi, goalkeeper for the Democratic Republic of the Congo national team, at the 2026 FIFA World Cup sparked widespread controversy after media reports revealed a dispute over his registration documents and legal eligibility to represent the national side.

According to reports published by The New York Times and Le Monde, legal officials at FIFA were aware of issues in the goalkeeper’s file before the World Cup began, yet he continued to play for the Congo national team despite incomplete registration procedures.

The reports indicate that the matter drew the ire of the Nigerian Football Federation, which filed an official complaint with FIFA, particularly after the Democratic Republic of the Congo eliminated Nigeria from the qualifiers before securing their World Cup berth via a playoff against Jamaica.

The investigations conducted by FIFA, prompted by Nigeria’s complaint, concluded that the Congolese Football Federation had not completed all necessary steps to legally register Mbasi for international competition.

Lionel Mbasi, 33, has earned 33 caps for the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Born in France, he previously represented French youth national teams before deciding to switch his international allegiance to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. At the club level, Mbasi plays for the French side Le Havre.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo began their World Cup campaign with a 1-1 draw against Portugal in the group stage, followed by a loss to Colombia and a victory over Uzbekistan.

Their tournament ended in the Round of 32 after a 2-1 defeat to England.
