AI conversations are no longer just fleeting question-and-answer exchanges. As digital assistants become more personalized, users share increasingly sensitive information with them, raising a fundamental question: What happens to this data after it is sent?
According to a recent Axios report, technology companies’ policies vary significantly. Apple relies heavily on on-device processing for requests and uses its private cloud computing system for more complex tasks, while affirming that data used there is not stored and is not accessible to Apple.
In contrast, the report indicates that Meta grants itself broader leeway in handling user data from its AI tools, while other services fall somewhere between these two models, differing in memory options, temporary conversations, and data usage.
The issue grows in importance as advertising enters some AI services. OpenAI began testing ads in certain ChatGPT plans in 2026, while providing privacy and customization controls.
In short, before sharing personal or sensitive information with any AI assistant, understanding privacy settings and data usage policies remains an essential step.
