FIRE strategy attracts generation seeking financial freedom and early retirement before 50

Waiting for the traditional retirement age is no longer the only option for some young workers, as proponents of a financial strategy known as “FIRE” (Financial Independence, Retire Early) bet on intensive saving and early investing, hoping to achieve financial independence and leave their jobs in their forties or even earlier.

Interest in the movement dubbed “Financial Independence and Early Retirement” has grown amid rising living costs, workplace pressures, and a growing desire to devote more time to travel and personal projects.

The concept typically involves cutting expenses and boosting savings and long-term investment rates, often relying on common benchmarks such as accumulating savings equal to 25 times annual expenses, and then applying the “4% rule” to estimate withdrawals from the portfolio after retirement.

However, these rules do not guarantee the plan’s success, as they may be affected by market volatility, inflation, healthcare costs, and the length of the retirement period. Yougov surveys also indicate widespread concern in European countries and the United States about the ability of pension systems to meet the needs of future generations.
