The Embassy of the Republic of Peru in the State of Kuwait hosted a reception to mark the opening of the exhibition “Ayacucho Retablos: A Living Tradition from the Peruvian Andes,” hosted by the Contemporary Art Platform Center (CAP Kuwait) and running until October 6. The event was attended by a number of diplomatic and cultural figures, as well as art and heritage enthusiasts.
Carlos Jimenez, the Ambassador of the Republic of Peru to Kuwait, said the exhibition serves as a window to showcase a distinctive aspect of Peru’s cultural heritage, offering visitors the opportunity to discover Peru through the colors and stories conveyed by the “Ayacucho Retablos,” which represent one of the most prominent forms of traditional art in his country.
He explained that these handicrafts originate from the Ayacucho region in the Andes Mountains. They consist of colorful wooden boxes containing miniature scenes that depict various aspects of daily life, celebrations, music, dance, traditional professions, and Andean customs. Jimenez added that each piece is handmade and hand-painted by skilled artisans, carrying a unique story while reflecting the creativity, identity, and cultural heritage of the Peruvian people. He noted that this art form has become one of the distinctive symbols of Peruvian folk art, contributing to the preservation of traditions and stories passed down through generations.
The Peruvian ambassador also touched upon the relations between Kuwait and Peru, affirming their strength and the progress they have witnessed over the past decades, particularly as the two countries approach completing nearly 50 years of diplomatic ties. He emphasized the importance of continuing to strengthen communication between the two peoples and expanding areas of bilateral cooperation. He pointed out that cultural events, including this exhibition, play a crucial role in fostering rapprochement between the two countries, as culture serves as a means to learn about the history, identities, and traditions of peoples, thereby enhancing mutual understanding and dialogue.
