The Central Bank of Kuwait announced the launch of the Kuwait Wage Payment System (KWPS), which is one of the strategic projects included in the second phase of the Kuwait National Payments System, managed and operated by the Central Bank of Kuwait.

In a press statement, the Central Bank of Kuwait clarified that the launch of KWPS aligns with its strategy to develop payment infrastructure, enhance digital transformation, and improve the efficiency of the banking sector, thereby supporting the state’s efforts to develop an advanced national payment system.

The system aims to establish an integrated national platform for processing and monitoring salary transfers to private-sector employees through local banks, enabling secure and reliable electronic salary disbursement. The Central Bank of Kuwait is responsible for the technical and operational management of the system, while the Public Authority for Manpower oversees and monitors employers’ compliance with the Wage Protection System regulations, thereby enhancing coordination between the two entities and raising levels of efficiency and governance.

The system relies on the latest technologies in payment systems and complies with international standards for financial message exchange (ISO 20022), representing a significant leap forward in the development of the state’s financial infrastructure. It also enhances transparency, efficiency, and speed in salary disbursement through local banks, enables electronic tracking of disbursements, reduces manual procedures, improves data quality and exchange among relevant parties, and promotes financial inclusion by encouraging the use of banking services and electronic payment methods. Additionally, it enables regulatory authorities to conduct real-time monitoring and early detection of non-compliance with salary payment obligations, while providing accurate data that supports decision-making and the formulation of policies related to the labor market.

The launch of the system continues the Central Bank of Kuwait’s efforts to implement the National Roadmap for the Development of the Payment System, which saw the launch of the Kuwait Automated Clearing House System in January 2026, followed by the launch of the Kuwait Dispute Management System in February 2026. The Kuwait Wage Payment System represents the third system to be launched under the second phase of the Kuwait National Payments System project.

The Central Bank of Kuwait concluded its statement by emphasizing that the system represents a qualitative addition to the national payment infrastructure, reflecting the pivotal role played by the Central Bank of Kuwait in leading projects to develop the country’s financial infrastructure. This supports the development of an advanced national payment system that adheres to best practices and international standards, characterized by efficiency, reliability, and flexibility, while consolidating Kuwait’s position as a developed financial center and keeping pace with global developments in the payments and digital financial services sector.
