Dr. Habiba Al-Muneef, the National Liaison Officer with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR), announced that the institute has obtained membership in the Arab Atomic Energy Agency (AAEA), a move that will enhance technical and scientific cooperation, facilitate the exchange of expertise, and strengthen national capacity-building in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
In a statement to KUNA, Dr. Al-Muneef, who also serves as a member of the Executive Council of the AAEA, said she met with the agency’s Director General, Dr. Salem Hamedi, in Vienna, Austria, to discuss ways to bolster cooperation between Kuwait and the AAEA in areas such as expertise exchange, national capacity-building, and leveraging the technical and training programs offered by the agency to Arab states.
She added that the meeting addressed opportunities to develop cooperation in areas of mutual scientific and technical interest, and reviewed Kuwait’s experience in managing its nuclear file, which has seen significant support and development in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy across the country.
She noted that this cooperation aligns with Kuwait’s presence in the Arab and international nuclear framework, and with Kuwait’s continued participation in IAEA activities and its utilization of technical cooperation and capacity-building programs in nuclear science and technology and their peaceful applications.
Dr. Al-Muneef emphasized that Kuwait attaches special importance to developing cooperation with specialized institutions to facilitate the transfer of expertise and knowledge, develop national cadres, and enhance the utilization of nuclear technologies in health, environment, agriculture, water resource management, and nuclear safety and security.
She highlighted the importance of sustained communication and coordination between Kuwaiti authorities and the AAEA, which will open avenues for further technical cooperation and expertise exchange, and support Kuwait’s efforts to develop an advanced national system in nuclear science and technology and its peaceful applications.
She reaffirmed Kuwait’s commitment to strengthening its presence in specialized international forums and leveraging Arab and international expertise to serve the goals of scientific research, development, and national capacity-building.
It is worth noting that the membership in the Arab Atomic Energy Agency was previously held by the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, before the file was transferred to the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research.
