Britain reaffirms its support for the Lebanese army and underscores its commitment to Lebanon's sovereignty and security

The British Embassy in Lebanon reported that Vice Admiral Edward Algarin, the UK’s Senior Defence Advisor for the Middle East and North Africa, concluded a two-day visit to Lebanon on September 23. During the visit, he met with President of the Republic Joseph Aoun, Minister of Defense Michel Mousa, and Commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces, Major General Rodolphe Heikel. He was accompanied by the British Chargé d’Affaires in Lebanon, Victoria Dunn, and Defence Attaché Craig Pearson.

The statement noted that Vice Admiral Algarin emphasized the UK’s continued partnership with the Lebanese Armed Forces and the vital role the army plays in securing Lebanon’s borders, supporting stability in the south, and enabling de-escalation efforts. The visit also reaffirmed the UK’s support for the Lebanese government, including its diplomatic efforts to ensure a more peaceful future for the Lebanese people that safeguards Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Following the visit, the British Chargé d’Affaires in Lebanon stated: “The United Kingdom remains committed to Lebanon’s sovereignty and long-term security. In our meetings, we reiterated our partnership with the Lebanese Armed Forces as the sole legitimate defender of Lebanon, and our support for the government’s work to strengthen state authority and assume full responsibility for security and de-escalation. The UK is ready to support efforts that protect Lebanon and its people.”

Algarin said: “It was a pleasure to return to Lebanon and meet with senior officials at this critical juncture. The UK will continue to work with the Lebanese Armed Forces in their pivotal role in maintaining security and stability across Lebanon.”

The statement added that “since 2009, the UK has contributed over £190 million to Lebanon’s security sector, including £69 million for Internal Security Forces and more than £120 million for the Lebanese Armed Forces through equipment, infrastructure, and training. Lebanon’s stability remains vital to the region.”
