Al-Burqan Opens Its World Handball Championship Campaign Today

Burqan will kick off its campaign in the IHF Club World Championship, currently being held in Egypt and running until October 1, at 6:45 PM today against Germany’s Füchse Berlin. The match is part of the first round of Group 2.

Burqan qualified for the tournament after winning the Asian Club Championship, which was hosted by Al-Kuwait Club at Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Hall in the Sabah Al-Salem district. Burqan’s Japanese professional player, Yasuhiro, will be absent from the tournament due to injury.

This edition of the tournament features the largest participation in its history, with 10 clubs representing various continents: Al-Ahly (Egypt), representing the host country; Barcelona (Spain), the defending champion; Burqan (Asia); AS Salé (Morocco), representing Africa; Füchse Berlin (Germany), representing Europe; Pinheiros (Brazil), representing South and Central America; Los Angeles (USA), representing North America and the Caribbean; Sydney (Australia), representing Oceania; along with Veszprém (Hungary) and Al-Zamalek (Egypt), both invited by the organizing committee.

Club President Anwar Al-Otaibi previously stated that the objective of participating is to prepare the team for the remaining matches of the previous season’s league and to get ready for the new season. He noted that Burqan is working to build a team capable of competing with the major clubs in various tournaments in the future.

He considered the tournament a unique opportunity to compete against the world’s best teams and a strong preparatory gateway for the new sports season. He pointed out that while Burqan has high ambitions, the current financial capabilities and preparation conditions do not match the scale and strength of this international competition.
