British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said the world must maximize the opportunities offered by artificial intelligence to lower living costs and support a more stable and secure world. In a speech to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Burnham noted that AI would be “a key driver of economic growth and a means to transform education, as well as a vital tool for safeguarding our security.” He announced that the UK is working on developing a new AI defense partnership with the United States to protect its critical national infrastructure, but warned that AI could also be “a source of disruption to the way we live and work and a multiplier of risks.” He added, “We have all heard the warnings, and we must take them seriously. I know the level of concern people feel, and we must rise to the moment.”
The Prime Minister also addressed relations with the European Union, stating, “We have deep ties with our friends in the EU, and we will work to deepen them further.” Burnham’s speech focused on support for Ukraine in the face of the Russian war, especially during the winter, emphasizing that “it is illegal for Moscow to continue its aggressive campaign against the Ukrainian people.” Regarding the Middle East, he said it is important to keep the two-state solution alive to achieve peace in the region, while stressing that Israeli occupation policies in Gaza and the West Bank are “unacceptable.” In this context, the British Prime Minister pointed out that the UK has imposed a trade ban on goods coming from illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank. On the issue of the Falkland Islands, he affirmed that his country would defend the right of the Falkland Islands’ residents to self-determination.
Earlier, Burnham met with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the General Assembly meetings, where they discussed a number of issues related to bilateral relations, as well as regional and international developments.
