Qatari Prime Minister: We are working with our regional and international partners to keep communication channels open and reduce tensions

Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, stated that “our region has experienced what I can only describe as an earthquake,” emphasizing that Qatar is working through diplomacy to ensure regional stability and is collaborating “with our regional and international partners to keep communication channels open and to de-escalate tensions.” He stressed that his country “will remain a committed mediator, and while we do not downplay the current uncertainty, we will not allow short-term disruptions to dictate our course.”

These remarks were made during a dialogue session with the Qatar Economic Forum, in partnership with Bloomberg, on the sidelines of the 2026 United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The Prime Minister affirmed that “energy is our strength, diversification is the source of our resilience, and technology is our future,” noting that “our financial system continued to operate and our companies maintained their activities despite recent developments.” He further stressed that “our region needs a framework that respects sovereignty and ensures that no state poses a threat to another, and that we must build trust and address the sources of tension.”

Bin Abdulrahman argued that “lasting security cannot be built through arrangements that leave any state vulnerable to insecurity, nor can it be achieved through recurring cycles of escalation and retaliation.” He added during the session that “diplomacy safeguards the conditions that enable people to trade, invest, and plan.” He pointed out that, from Qatar’s perspective, “diplomacy and economic stability are closely linked, and through investment, we are advancing reforms, enhancing our resilience, and creating opportunities for growth.”

For his part, the spokesperson for the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “For roughly two weeks, we have been exchanging differing views regarding the resumption of Iran talks, and we are working through our mediation team with Tehran and Washington to determine the possibility of restarting them.” He added, “Our mediators are currently shuttling between various capitals in hopes of making progress in this process.” He confirmed, “We have received assurances from U.S. administration officials that Washington wants to reach an agreement.”
