Dortmund takes sole lead in the German Bundesliga

Borussia Dortmund secured sole possession of the top spot in the German Bundesliga after defeating hosts VfB Stuttgart 1-0 in Matchday 4, while SC Freiburg came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with hosts Eintracht Frankfurt.

Maximilian Beier gifted the “Black and Whites” their fourth consecutive victory, placing them atop the table with 12 points, two points ahead of Freiburg and defending champions Bayern Munich.

Dortmund had struggled against Stuttgart in recent seasons, losing five consecutive league and cup matches, but they have won twice and drawn once in their last three encounters.

Freiburg could have also reached 12 points, but at least they maintained their unbeaten record.

Freiburg fell behind twice, first after ten minutes through Moroccan-born Youssef Ait Bennasser, who has been called up to the German national team under coach Jürgen Klopp for the UEFA Nations League.

However, Derry Scherhant equalized (34'), before Jonathan Burkardt restored the hosts’ lead (36'). Japanese forward Yuito Suzuki then scored again to level the match (48'). This ended Freiburg’s winning streak of six matches across all competitions, though the draw extended their unbeaten run to nine matches.

Frankfurt remain in the middle of the table, having won only one of their four matches (5 points).

Mainz recorded a thrilling 4-3 victory over hosts Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Mainz moved up to 7 points, while Mönchengladbach remain at the bottom of the table without a point.

In other matches, Hamburg defeated visitors Köln 2-1, and Werder Bremen beat visitors Augsburg 3-2.
