City takes sole lead with win over Sunderland

Manchester City continued their perfect start to the new Premier League season by securing their fifth consecutive victory, defeating visitors Sunderland 5-3 yesterday in the fifth round of the English Premier League.

The "Citizens" led 3-2 at halftime in a match in which Dutchman Bryan Brobbey shone for Sunderland, scoring a hat-trick (12', 33', 59'). Meanwhile, Ghanaian Antoine Semenyo scored twice for Manchester City (43', 57') and provided an assist for Frenchman Ryan Cherki, who scored his third goal of the season (29').

The opening goal of the match went to City, scored by Argentine Enzo Fernández, who opened his account with his new club with a brilliant free kick (9'). The fifth goal for the hosts, and the eighth of the match overall, was scored by Norwegian Erling Haaland, who raised his league tally to five goals this season, assisted by Croatian Joško Gvardiol (81'), securing his seventh consecutive victory for manager Marco Silva across all competitions since the start of the season.

Manchester United’s match against hosts Fulham ended in a 1-1 draw. Fulham took the lead through an own goal by Manchester United defender Lisandro Martínez (63'), before Matheus Cunha equalized with a long-range shot (89').

Manchester United now have five points in 12th place, while Fulham sit in 18th place with two points.

Spanish manager Andoni Iraola made a successful return to the stadium of his former club Bournemouth, whom he managed from 2023 until the end of last season, leading Liverpool to a single-goal victory. Swedish striker Alexander Isak scored the only goal in the 57th minute, raising his personal tally to four goals this season.

Leeds United drew 0-0 with visitors Crystal Palace.
